Retention Requirements

Any student admitted to NIU can declare accountancy as a major. However, all students must meet the College of Business and Department of Accountancy retention requirements before they will be allowed to enroll in upper-level courses. Learn more about limited retention requirements at NIU >

In order to enroll in any 300- or 400-level accountancy courses, you must meet requirement option 1 or option 2. If you have questions about these requirements, please contact an accountancy advisor for assistance.

Option #1

    1. Meet the College of Business core requirements
    2. Earn a 3.00/4.00 minimum cumulative GPA at all colleges and universities attended
    3. Earn a B or higher in both ACCY 206 and ACCY 207 or the equivalent courses

Option #2

    1. Meet the College of Business core requirements
    2. Pass the Accountancy Qualifying Exam (AQE)

Transcript Review Process

Once you are ready to start taking upper-level accountancy courses, you must submit a completed transcript review form with a copy of your unofficial transcript to the Department of Accountancy in Barsema Hall 345. You must complete this form in addition to the College of Business transcript review form for UBUS 310 (available in Barsema Hall 201).

If you are an incoming transfer student, you will complete a transcript review form at transfer orientation.

You will be able to download a copy of the review form from this webpage after transcript review meetings are completed each semester.
