You must successfully complete the finance core (FINA 330, 340, 350). Keep in mind that although your performance in all classes is taken into consideration, performance in FINA 340 is weighted more heavily.

The fund invests in U.S. companies and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) with market capitalizations of $1 billion or more. The fund is 100 percent equity and is value style. Established in 2023, the Jamrok Options Trading Practicum provides undergraduate and graduate students with a unique opportunity to apply advanced technology — including Bloomberg terminals, data visualization tools and programming skills — to actively trade stock options using generously donated funds. Unlike the Student Managed Portfolio, the Options Portfolio exclusively trades stock options without hedging or backing by underlying stock holdings. It emphasizes short-term trading strategies and technical analysis, whereas the Student Managed Portfolio adopts a long-term perspective rooted in fundamental analysis. Interested students are encouraged to complete an online application.
The PACK (Portfolio – Analysis – Collaboration – Knowledge) Development Program is an initiative within NIU’s College of Business that leverages a unique, tiered structure to cultivate financial literacy, leadership and professional development among students of all levels and backgrounds. The program offers a multi-tiered pathway to success in finance and investment management. You’ll advance through the program’s dynamic pyramid structure, beginning as NIU Investment Association members and becoming PACK ambassadors and/or apprentices. Next, you will become analysts in either of the department’s applied portfolios, hone both soft and technical skills, complete valuable certifications and badges and potentially earn course credit. Learn more about the PACK Development Program.

The class meets twice a week (once a week over the summer), but you are also expected to meet with your fellow analysts outside of class.
It varies from week to week, but plan on spending your time doing research, working on projects and helping update the SMP webpage. Further, outside of the regular class meetings, you are expected to periodically participate in external presentations, observe actual executive committee meetings, travel to the offices of local alumni for site visits, and participate in College of Business recruiting events, such as open houses and Welcome Days.
We are allowed to invest in large-cap equities (over $1 billion) and equity mutual funds.
For the most current value, please see the Portfolio Holdings.
Student Managed Portfolio Application
During my graduate studies, I (was) in the Student Managed Portfolio (SMP), where six to 10 people oversee a portfolio of over $1 million. In these environments, you can get to know others very easily. We have a lot of fun in the lab because everyone from the SMP spends many hours there each week. We work and have fun together, which I think is an amazing combination.
