Operations Management and Information Systems Advising

All operations and information management (O&IM) majors should check MyNIU/Navigate to verify their advisor assignment.

The Academic Advising Center is the advising office for all first-year students who have earned less than 24 credit hours.

Undergraduate students whose assigned academic advisor is Shannon Gates can schedule an advising appointment by using the personal availability link (PAL) below. Students who are interested in learning more about our business analytics minor and/or certificates of undergraduate study can also schedule an advising appointment. Students may use the PAL link below, email sgates@niu.edu, or call 815-753-1286 to schedule an appointment.

OM&IS Advising Checklist

Schedule an appointment with your advisor each semester. And schedule it early in the semester! Waiting until the course schedule is available in MyNIU can cause a delay in getting a timely appointment.

Declare your major as early in the semester as possible. Changing your major at the end of a semester, after registration has begun, may prevent you from graduating on time. Declared majors have first priority in course registration.

Review your Academic Requirements Report) each semester through MyNIU. You are responsible for your graduation requirements. This report is prepared by Registration and Records, the office that will do a final check on your academic requirements for graduation.

Check your financial aid status each semester, if applicable.

Make sure encumbrances are removed prior to registration. You will not be able to register unless they are addressed.

Keep any and all advising paperwork (including your Academic Requirements Report and a current transcript), so you have a complete record of your academic history.

Ensure that your address is correct with Registration and Records. If an advisor needs to contact you for any reason and the correct information isn't in the computer, it could be detrimental to your academic career.

Checklist for Juniors

Declare your major early while in business principles courses. Declared majors have first priority in course registration. Changing your major at the end of a semester may prevent you from getting the courses you need to graduate on time (because of prerequisites or closed classes, etc.).

Meet with your upper-division operations & information management advisor.

Gain major-related experience through internships. Register on Huskies Get Hired, NIU’s online job search database. Complete your profile, upload your resume and explore the site.

Get involved on campus to gain leadership experience. Consider joining the Association for Operations Management (APICS), the Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP) or the OM&IS Student Advisory Board (SAB).

Apply for scholarships. Applications for OM&IS scholarships are due at the end of February.

Review your Academic Requirements Report each semester. You are responsible for your graduation requirements. If you find a discrepancy on your report, contact your advisor and/or Registration and Records as soon as possible.

Checklist for Seniors

Once you have 90 hours earned and know when you're graduating, apply for graduation in MyNIU. Please be aware of the strict graduation application deadlines.

Review your Academic Requirements Report each semester. After registering for your last semester, wait at least 24 hours and then run your report again. Once you have all requirements completed or in progress, you will see the statement "All requirements completed - in progress courses used" toward the top of your report.

Remember that you are responsible for your graduation requirements. Registration and Records generates the Academic Requirements Report. Registration and Records also runs a final check on your requirements for graduation. If you find any discrepancies, be sure to contact Registration and Records or your academic advisor as soon as possible.

If you have received financial aid, schedule your exit counseling.

Use Huskies Get Hired and take advantage of campus recruiting. To do so, you must attend an orientation session led by Career Services. These sessions are only held during the first few weeks of the semester - don't miss out!

Read all mail and meet all graduation/commencement deadlines.  Commencement information (tickets, cap and gown, time/location, etc.) is posted on the Convocation Center website.
